dlhvm_sm.jpgLAS VEGAS - After a twenty month lay-off and with the crowd firmly behind him, The Golden Boy, Oscar De La Hoya, returned to the ring Saturday, May 6, beating Ricardo Mayorga with a TKO in the 6th round to become the new WBC Junior Middleweight Champion at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Both fighters came out aggressively, but, De La Hoya landed a lefthook which knocked Mayorga down in the first minute of the first round. Mayorga regained his composure and swung wildly, but De La Hoya continued his attack and again dazed Mayorga who countered with two overhand rights. With 45 seconds left in the second round De La Hoya threw a combination, causing Mayorga to wobble.

Mayorga connected with a right uppercut late in the third round but De La Hoya again kept control of the round. Mayorga was warned in the fourth and fifth rounds for hitting to the back of the head but De La Hoya continued to dominate fight.

De La Hoya continued the brutal attack on Mayorga, and Referee Jay Nady called a halt to the bout at 1:25 of the 6th round after De La Hoya sent Mayorga to the canvas for a third time making the Golden Boy the new WBC Junior Middleweight Champion and giving him his tenth world title in six different weight classes.
