“The World Awaits” – Exciting of Boring?posted by Kathleen Holland on April 19, 2007, in Events“The World Awaits” is one of the most publicized events in recent boxing history. The mega fight between the “Golden Boy”, Oscar De La Hoya and “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather, Jr. has certainly been the main event in the boxing buzz. One would expect that when these two warriors get into the ring on May 5 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas that fans will see the most exciting bout in recent times. I would say that the immense respect that the boxers have for each other would make the bout boring, but I don’t feel that Mayweather has any respect for De La Hoya at all. If he does he hides it pretty well. Oscar, on the other hand, who has always been the epitome of everything that is good and great in boxing, is facing probably the biggest challenge of his career, holding his tongue while the trash talking Mayweather continues his verbal abuse of Oscar and the entire De La Hoya team. Albeit, Oscar has gotten in a few good shots, but it doesn’t come as natural for him as it does for Mayweather. When it all comes down to the first bell on May 5, will the sold out crowd and the millions watching all over the world see an exciting fight, or will we see Floyd run like he did against Carlos Baldomir. Personally, I thought that was a very boring fight and if Floyd decides to follow his same game plan for this fight, I’m afraid we are in for a very boring fight. Hopefully, Oscar has a good game plan to cut Mayweather off and make the fight exciting. Be that as it may, even if the fight is a bust, the pre-fight antics have made this a memorable fight already.
