Tecate Beer Teams Up With Golden Boy and Scores a Big KOposted by Kathleen Holland on May 7, 2007, in News
Tecate Mexican Cerveza has teamed up with Golden Boy Promotions in a very aggressive marketing campaign to promote the great sport of boxing. With other major fights already planned, the partnership is bringing a whole new level to the promotion and marketing side of a major boxing event. The Mega fight between Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather is history now, but the tremendous success of the campaign Tecate put together for this event has saturated a huge marketplace. Tecate’s reach to consumers is vast with the production of a million 24 ounce commemorative cans sporting a replica of the official fight poster on one side. In addition to the commemorative can, Tecate’s other advertising methods included television, radio, and out of home exposure. At the event site, they had point of sale displays as well as ring advertising and some very beautiful “Tecate Girls”. “Great sponsors can only be great as a result of the partnerships we are able to establish with organizations like Golden Boy.” said Eduardo Casas, Brand Director of Tecate. “And for those people that think the sport of boxing is dead, I think this week and the last thirty days as we have kicked off all of our promotion activity around the country , the excitement and passion is out there, because we are sensing it, we are selling a whole lot of Tecate around the country as a result of our involvement with Golden Boy and this weekend’s fight. We are truly committed to this sport, the sport is alive and especially Mexican consumers are passionate about boxing and they are passionate about Tecate so this partnership is one that is truly meant to be.” Tecate’s future plans with Golden Boy include the Bernard Hopkins vs Winky Wright fight on July 17 as well as a possible rematch of Barrera vs Marquez on September 16. “For Tecate, boxing is the embodiment of boldness and masculinity which is what we want our brand to be” said Carlos Boughton, Brand Manager for Tecate, “So with every fight that we do I am sure we are going to come up with something different, something better, something more exciting for the consumers and the boxing fans.” “The US used to be a market where the people thought the only interesting fights are the heavyweight fights and with the newer generation of Hispanic fighters they are making people think twice about the lighter weight classes like welter and middleweight.” added Boughton They can be much more exciting than heavyweight fights. The action is faster, they have to be more nimble and the strategy plays a much more important role, and we think that between the growth of the Hispanic population in the US and the quality of the newer generation of fighters, fighters like Barrera and Marquez and the guys that are fighting here today, they think they have the ability to create a whole new generation of boxing.” Tecate has only been sponsoring boxing since the first of the year, but the impact they have made is tremendous. In addition to the major events, their boxing platform includes title sponsorship of “Boxeo en esta Esquina”, “Lo Mejor de Boxeo en Esta Esquina” and “Solo Boxeo Tecate”, three very popular boxing programs which are telecast on Telefutura and Galavision. With passionate sponsors like Tecate, boxing is sure to thrive.
