Pavlik Takes Middleweight Titleposted by Kathleen Holland on September 30, 2007, in The Kronk Connection
Note: After watching the fight again on HBO, I have come to the conclusion that Kelly Pavlik beat Jermain Taylor down in the seventh round to the point where Taylor was out and unable to continue. The position from which I watched the fight live had Taylor’s back to me and it was impossible to see his face from that angle. His face told the story and the call was a correct one, Taylor was not responding with connecting punches, just wild flailing shots that were in no way a threat. .
Taylor had Pavlik in trouble in the second round, but couldn't finish him off. Pavlik had Taylor stunned in the seventh and he was not able to continue. The referee stopped the bout as soon as Taylor went to the floor. Taylor had been in control for most of the fight, even though Pavlik was able to hit Taylor with just about every right he threw. With a rematch in the works, it will be interesting to see how the next installment plays out. The other fight of the night was the co-feature, an NABF Welterweight championship fight between Andre Berto (20-0, 17 KOs) and David Estrada (21-4, 12 KOs). Berto scored an 11th round TKO over Estrada in an exciting brutal battle. On the undercard, Middleweight, Ronald Hearns (16-0, 13 KOs) defeated Robert Kamya (16-8, 4 KOs) by TKO at 2:42 of the first round. Chazz Witherspoon (20-0, 14 KOs) defeated Ron Guerrero (19-15-3, 13 KOs) in a heavyweight bout after the bout was stopped after the fifth round on the advice of the doctor. Ronney Vargas (2-1, 1 KO) scored a unanimous decision over Bruce Burkhardt (0-3) in a four round junior middleweight bout. Omar Sheika (27-8, 18 KOs) defeated Tiwon Taylor (26-14-1, 19 KOs) by 4th round TKO in a Light Heavyweight bout, Heavyweight Robert Hawkins (22-9, 7 KOs) defeated Terry Smith (30-3, 18 KOs) by unanimous decision in a 6 round bout. Carlos Quintana (24-1, 19 KOs) scored a 4th round TKO over Christopher Henry (23-19, 17 KKOs) in a welterweight bout. Richard Pierson (5-1, 3 KOs) defeated Ray Smith (7-2, 2 KOs) by 5th round TKO in a super middleweight bout.
