Darren Sutherland advanced to the last thirty two of the World Championships and Olympic qualifiers at the University of Illinois in Chicago after receiving a walkover today.
But David Oliver Joyce is out after he lost his preliminary round bout to Davi Souza this evening. The Brazilian took the
opening three rounds before being handed a 21-10 verdict.
Sutherland, from St Saviours OBA, received a walkover after his opponent, Roy Albert Cook, from the Caribbean island of Dominica, failed to make the weigh-in. Sutherland will now meet either Andranik Hakobeyan from Armenia or Naim Terbunjo from Sweden in the last thirty two on Saturday.
Commentating on today's action, IABA High Performance Director Gary Keegan, admitted that David Oliver was always playing catch up against the Brazilian who got off to a flying start.
He said: "The Brazilian boxer made a great start and David was playing catch up from the start and near the end
he was left with too much to do. David is obviously disappointed with the defeat, as indeed we all are. But this was his first major championships and he can only learn from this."
John Joe Joyce bowed out of the tournament in the early hours of this morning when after he lost his preliminary round bout to Gyula Kate from Hungary (32-17).
Irish captain Ken Egan, Roy Sheahan, Eric Donovan, Conor Ahern and Paddy Barnes will all be involved in preliminary round bouts tomorrow.
Most boxers reaching the quarter finals in Chicago will qualify for the Olympics, although heavyweights and super heavyweights must reach the semi finals to qualify for Beijing because of the lower entry levels in these weight categories.
