The National U/21 Championships got underway at the National Stadium in Dublin tonight with quarter final bouts in most weight categories.

Mayo bantamweight Danny Coughlin got his counties quest for an U/21 title off to a positive start, leading all the way before being declared a 13-8 winner over Glen Murray.

And in the other 54Kg contest of the evening the impressive Ruairi Dalton ensured that there was double disappointment for Dublin clubs with a convincing 20-4 victory over Kieran Cummins.

Lightweight Sonny Upton-who won the featherweight U/21 title last year- reversed the balance for the Dubs however, opening up a 4-1,8-3 lead at the bell for the end of rounds one and two versus Ray Moylett and then increasing his margin by ten points in the third.

But Moylett rallied in the final round, racking up four points as opposed to Upton's one. However, that was as close as the St Anne's man got to his Westside opponent.

In the other 60Kg bouts, Stephen Donnelly forced Clive Condron into a standing count in the third en route to a comfortable win, while there were lightweight victories also for last seasons finalist John Murray (RSCO3), and Tony Bates, who emerged victorious despite a brave performance from James O'Donnell.

Crumlins Jamie Kavanagh edged to within two fights of an Irish title thanks to a convincing 63Kg verdict over Paul Baker and was joined in the semi finals by the Ulster duo of Glenn Smyth and Niall McGinley and Adam Nolan.

Smyth led all the way against Paul Baker while the Adam Nolan/James Ferrin clash was stopped in the fourth following an injury to Ferrin. Both boxers were tied at 7-7 at the end of the third.

McGinley, meanwhile, opened up from the second round up to book his ticket into the last four at the expense of Keith Coady. Noel Somers and Christy Boyle also got the decisions.

The Thomas Finnegan/John Joe Joyce clash proved to be an explosive affair with Joyce advancing to the semi finals after Finnegan was disqualified after receiving three public warnings.

Darndale light middleweight Michael Collins produced the comeback of the evening in a thriller with Mark Carlyle. The Crumlin man was leading all the way into the final round but Collins pulled out all the stops to win by a two point margin.

Derry ace Conor Coyle saw off the challenge of Terry Garland and defending 71Kg champion Stephen O'Reilly moved to within sixteen minutes of successfully defending his title following a win over Patrick A Ward.

One way or the other the Olympic BC of Galway was going to have one boxer in the middleweight semi finals after club-mates Brian Brosnan and Ian Carmichael went head-to-head in the last eight: Brosnan advanced after a 16-6 decision.

Padraig McCrory forced Corkman Patrick O'Shea into a standing count in the first after landing a stiff right and led all the way to the final bell of a comfortable victory.

And Martin Lynch and Donal Ward advanced from the last two contests of the evening following wins over Kyle Holmes and Luke Keeler.

The 2007 National U/21 Championships will resume with two sessions tomorrow (Saturday October 13th) beginning at 2.30pm and 7pm.
The weigh-in will be held at the National Stadium between 8am and 9am tomorrow.
