Middleweight Darren Sutherland is within one fight of Olympic qualification following an edge of the seat (22-20) last 32 win over Armenian Andranik Hakobyan at the 2007 World Championships and Olympic qualifiers the University of Illinois in Chicago last night.
But super heavyweight Cathal McMonagle is out after a first round stoppage to European champion Islam Timurziev-ranked third in the World and second in Europe-in the early hours of this morning.
Hakobyan and Sutherland shared the first 5-5, but the St Saviours Dublin man took the next two rounds (11-10,17-15) before emerging victorious by a margin of two points at the concluding bell of a tense and tactical four rounder.
Sutherland-ranked 6th in the World- will now meet Alfonso Blanco from Venezuela in the last 16 in the early hours of next Wednesday morning (Irish time), with a place in the 2008 Olympics up for grabs.
Blanco beat India's Vijender Singh last night.
Four Irish boxers, Ken Egan, Roy Sheahan, Eric Donovan and Paddy Barnes will be in action today (October 28th) just two bouts away from securing qualification for the 2008 Olympics.
Irish captain Egan faces Julio Torres Castillo of Ecuador, and Barnes clashes with Iran's Sadegh Zade Faraj.
Sheahan is looking at a tricky encounter with Rusian Khairov from Azerbaijan and Donovan goes head-to-head with Jonathan Batisa of the Dominican Republic.
Heavyweight John Sweeney meets Russian Rakhim Chakhkiev on Tuesday following his impressive victory over Serb, Branco Srdic on Friday.
Heavyweights and super heavyweights must reach the semi finals in Chicago to secure Olympic qualification.
A quarter final finish is enough for all other weight categories to book their tickets for the Beijing 2008 Games.
