Before this interview began I was searching for creative and catchy titles that would draw
attention to my subject, Bobby Gunn-former IBA champ and World ranked Cruiserweight whose sight is set on a Light Heavyweight title shot. I came up with: Top Gunn, Smoking Gunn, Son of a Gunn and Have Gunn will Travel.

My perception all changed after the interview, while the catchy titles do describe Bobby in some regards a more honest definition is : Bobby is a real bad boy inside the ring but outside the ring he's a real good man.

I was ecstatic about talking to Bobby and yet I didn't want to appear as a cookie-cutter type interviewer asking the same tired and obvious questions. My mission was to get inside the mind of the fighter and have a down to earth discussion about things that he has rarely been asked about before.

Don't get me wrong, I researched all that is Gunn and knew all the facts, figures and dates that were important. If Bobby wanted to talk boxing I was ready. As luck would have it, I explained to Bobby I wasn't your typical boxing reporter (more of a boxing diva) and his words to me were,
"Go for it" and that's just what I did.

Bobby was very easy to talk to and there was not one ounce of arrogance in his responses. His answers were heart-felt and honest and more importantly- they were real. Any pro boxer can spew off the pretty words of a press release but it takes a real man to sit down and wear his heart on his sleeve and even manage to have a few laughs along the way. Here's a look into what Bobby and I chatted about: (I wish our talk could have gone on longer)

J- What motivates you Bobby?
BG- Coming from nothing and having a hard life-I truly appreciate life. I know time is something you can never get back. I want to make a better life for my little boy and family.

J-I have read that you manage yourself?
BG-The boxing business is dirty. Most managers are control freaks and practically stalk their boxers. I didn't want to deal with that so that is why I manage myself. I also have a good team behind me.

J- Are you nervous before a fight?
BG- Not too much anymore. I'm more worried about the fight actually taking place.

J-What is the hardest part of the sport for you?
BG-Promoters, managers, the business side of boxing. Their are many empty promises in the fight game.

J- What comes easiest, most natural?
BG- Getting in the ring and fighting. The dressing room and the long walk to the ring can un- nerve you but just fighting is easiest for me.

J-What do you fear?
BG- Not doing my best. Being looked upon as a loser.

J- What are your interests outside of boxing?
BG- Working (I do construction work and paint houses), spending time with the family, and church.

J-If you didn't box what would you be doing?
BG- Construction/house painting

J-Favorite boxer?
BG- I like the old school boxers. Sugar Ray Robinson

J- Describe yourself in 5 words.
BG- Straight-forward, follows the Golden Rule (do onto others...) and Humble.
J- I added, when asked Honest and Determined

J- Do you think your good looks have anything to do with your popularity?
BG- (laughs) My wife tells me I'm handsome. I really don't know if it has anything to do with my fans.
J- (smiles) I think it does.

J- Anything you'd like to say in closing?
BG-I'm honored that you called me. I want to thank you, Mightygloves and my fans.

We also discussed his previous fights and the fact that he wants a fight with Thomaz Adamek for the WBC Lt. Heavyweight Title. ( I hope he gets it.)

By reading this feature maybe you are just learning who Bobby Gunn is and I encourage you to find out more about this dedicated fighter and exceptional man. I truly believe he has the ability to take on anyone he challenges. Boxers beware- Bobby is looking to rumble. Don't let the "kindness" of Bobby be mistaken for weakness. That is definitely NOT the case here. Bobby is World Champ material and will kick some serious ass in the squared circle if given the chance.

Note- This writer is pleased to support Team Gunn.
