Dan is the 18 year old author of the newly published book, "Bringing Back Boxing" and also assistant editor of doghouseboxing.com. After giving Dan a positive review for his new book. I was anxious to speak to the author one on one.
Dan was very amiable and gracious during our phone conversation. He has an awesome Bostonian accent too. ( I love accents.) He immediately thanked me for my review on Mightygloves.com and also for taking time out to interview him. From his sensible attitude and straight-forward answers to my questions the public will be able to see Dan is a mature, grounded and positive indivdual who truly loves boxing.
Here is what we chatted about:
J What was your motivation behind the book?
DH There is too much negative press dealing with the sport of boxing. I wanted to write about the positives in boxing.
J Do you feel your age is a pro or con in your writing career?
DH It's a double edged sword. Some people respect my writing while others don't which is upsetting because I have a lot to offer.
J How will your book benefit the boxing community?
DH It will help the casual fan learn about boxing and the hard core fans see the magic of the sport.
J How can we keep boxing in a positive light?
DH Golden Boy Promotions is doing a good job promoting fair fights. The media definitely needs to be more positive. I believe sports announcers are starting to become better at showing what is great about the boxers and the fight. Also people need to stop comparing boxing with MMA. They are two totally different sports.
J How is the feedback on your book?
DH So far all has been positive.
J From conception to publication how long did the book take to write?
DH Half of the book contains my previously written articles ( starting in 2006)and half is new material. Basically, three months to write and five months total.
J Any plans for future books?
DH My next book could possibly be a biography. My goal is to do one book every summer.
J If you could change anything about the book what would it be?
DH To have made it a little longer with a few more chapters but I didn't want to give away all my thoughts in this one book.
J I noticed that you tried to stay completely away from the negative side of boxing in this book..why?
DH I didn't want to discuss anything negative in this book.
J I have a bone to pick with you concerning the book.
DH Go ahead.
J You mention Vegas and New York as boxing mecca's but what about Atlantic City in my home state?
DH Atlantic City puts on major fights as does new York but Vegas puts on both minor and major fights. You can usually see a fight a night in Vegas.
J Touche
J How easy or difficult was it to publish a book in the particular area of boxing.
DH It was easy as I choose self-publishing.
J Why did you choose boxing as your topic?
DH I like it. I also had the time and the talent to do so.
J Where is the book available?
DH www.lulu.com/content/1499553
J What do you want the reader to know/believe when they finish the book?
DH When finishing the book I want the fans to see the positive at fights. If they read about the sport of boxing perhaps they will like it more. Also many fighter's personalities are intersting.
J What was your goal in writing this book?
DH To put a positive spin on the sport of boxing.
J What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your book?
DH One revelation that made me sad was that people do not respect my age and knowledge of boxing and that translate into not respecting the book.
J Anything you'd like to say in closing?
DH If you like boxing this is a good book to read. I appreciate your review and this interview and all you have done for me. Thank you very much.
I throughly enjoyed this interview with Dan and look forward to reading his future creative projects. Being both boxing writers, I know Dan and I share a bond of the written word as well as the love of boxing.
