Obviously, Bernard Hopkins wasn't thinking when he made the racial slur. " I will never lose to a white boy" at a recent media press conference. The slur, (Yes it was a slur. It was more than just an insult or just friendly boxing hype.) was directed toward Joe Calzaghe. This type of classless behavior from a seasoned professional boxer is what draws negativity to the sport where it is definitely not appreciated or needed.

Bernard Hopkins should have known better. Maybe it was punch drunkenness that made this intentional comment slip out but what ever his excuse might be it was just one big no-no. BH needs to remember some important lessons from his childhood. Mainly, " If you can't say something nice, then keep your mouth shut." He would also be advised by this writer to remember "It is better to speak softly and carry a big stick."

Without granting this topic more media-hyped then it needs to be I will simply say, Bernard Hopkins, Shame on you! Boxing does not need any more black eyes from within it's own community. Next time you speak up, remember that less is more and a sure way to annihilate fans of every race is to hide behind the race card. Shame on you, Bernard Hopkins!
