Kathy Holland is the editor of Mightygloves.com. Mightygloves. com is presently located in Las Vegas, Nevada. Kathy is an avid boxing fan and supporter. I first contacted Kathy after surfing the Web for boxing sites. Noticing that the site happen to be looking for boxing writers and this was an idea that appealed to my curious side (since I have been writing a boxing novel for-forever and I share a love of the sport) on a whim I contacted Kathy about writing for Mightygloves.
She returned my email quickly and was very helpful in explaining to me what was expected of a writer for the site and encouraged me to try my hand at writing an article.
I explained to her that I was not the boxing reporter type but would love to explore "beyond the ropes" topics to write about.
She was excited and supportive of this concept and right away we started to brain storm ideas. It was never as if we were strangers talking business it was more like two friends putting their heads together to come up with a game plan. There was never any demands set by Kathy that would stifle a creative writer.( Kathy basically gave me free reign on any feature I chose to write). This was the selling point that made me a loyal viewer, supporter and feature writer for Mightygloves along with Kathy's great personality and enthusiasm.
I am extremely grateful for the opportunity Kathy and Mightygloves has given me to express my ideas about the sweet science. If that first email was not answered so timely and positively by Kathy there never would have been a sports column that showed a different take on the sport of boxing.
Let's talk to Kathy:
Why did you get involved in boxing?
I have a love for all sports and my better half is a photographer ( and a darn good one I might add) and a huge fan of the sport of boxing. We both love boxing and so we started Mightygloves.com.
Your personal boxing experience includes...Covering many major boxing events in locations all across the United States
Favorite boxer and why? I have two favorite boxers. Jermain Taylor, who is from my hometown of Little Rock, AR., and Andy Lee, who is an up and coming Middleweight from Ireland and he has the talent, charisma and good looks to make him a super star.
Favorite all time fight and why? Casius Clay vs. Sonny Liston. Because it was the first fight I ever remember (oops, I guess I told my age!) and even thought I was a little girl, the excitement of the event was something I never forgot.
A good boxer is... a dedicated individual with focus, desire, a lot of heart, determination and a good team around him.
A good trainer/coach is... dedicated to his fighter.
How can we keep boxing strong? Boxing needs more exposure. I think "The Contender" is good for boxing because it shows people the everyday human side to a boxer, even though I am not a big fan of all the drama, it has brought in people to boxing that would have never watched. At MG we try to show the dedication and ambition of the fighter in the ring and out of the ring.
Your famous last words about boxing... has the nicest and most docile young men and women out of the ring, but when they enter the ring, it is a whole different story. Most boxers I know are very down to earth and extremely nice.
The sport of boxing can be credited with saving many young men and women from a life of crime and jail or prison. It has given them a "safe" haven for them to face life and all of its challenges and disappointments. It molds them into productive and upstanding citizens.
