Before we get started on our weekly review, I’d like to apologize for the tardiness of this week’s column, but as boxing fans I believe you will understand that some smoke had to be cleared after world war 3(Cotto-Margarito) before a review could be written for this unusual week in boxing.

Wow, that was absolutely incredible! Two great boxing nations standing behind their finest pugilists in a battle of will, all resulting in a career defining win for Antonio Margarito. One person who was undoubtedly tuned in closely to this fight was Oscar De la hoya. Oscar was rumored to be fighting either the winner of this super fight, or, wait for it…Manny Pacquiao. No disrespect for the Pac-Man but I’m going to go out on a limb and guess he might be the safer bet for the Golden Boy, call me crazy but I don’t think going from Steve Forbes to Antonio Margarito is a very smooth transition. I’m not a psychic or anything but I’m going to guess that after watching Saturday’s terminator like performance by Margarito, Oscar’s post fight dialogue with matchmaker Richard Schaefer went something like this….
Richard: How do you feel about Antonio for your farewell fight?
Oscar: It’s cool, let’s see what’s cooking at SUPER FEATHERWEIGHT, okay Pac-Man, yea sign me up!
While a Miguel Cotto loss may be rare, premature retirements certainly have not been lately, and time will tell if Jeff Lacy may be pulling a Brett Favre on us all. Lacy retired this week after stumbling his way to a win over Epifanio Mendoza. Lacy cited boxing’s status as a “dirty business” for his retirement. For a minute I thought he was referring to the judge who scored the Mendoza fight 97-93 in Lacy’s favor, that would have been pretty noble of him. It has surfaced however, Lacy was actually reffering to his insulting offer of $550,000 to fight Jermain Taylor. I can understand where a former World champ might feel a little slighted making opponent’s money in a fight where Taylor would be stepping into Lacy’s world at 168, but that whole life and death battle we saw on Wednesday Night Fights might not be the best grounds for a raise.
Am I the only one who has noticed that the boxing media has been sending out the bat signal for Floyd Mayweather lately? I lost count of how many times I was reminded that Floyd turned down 8 million for a fight with Margarito during the build up for Saturday’s fight. After the fight on Saturday Bob arum also put his two cents in, assuring us that Mayweather wants no part of Antonio.
“Now we know why Floyd didn’t want 8 million to fight this beast”
Maybe it’s just me but I’m going to guess that might have been a shot at aggravating Floyd out of retirement, just guessing.
Before I say goodbye for the week I have a few boxing tidbits and rumors,
Arthur Abraham was accused of sexually harassing his masseuse during training camp. This coming after Arthur’s brother was said to have kicked Edison Miranda after their June rematch…the same rematch in which they were car-robbed at the airport afterwards, those wacky Abraham’s just can’t get it together, sitcom anyone?
Word on the street is James Toney’s knockout win of Hasim Rahman is close to be overturned and scored a no contest.
In the time that I have been writing this article Jeff Lacy’s retirement is said to be over.

Until next week God bless

*note: If Oscar De la hoya indeed takes a fight with Antonio Margaritio I promise a letter of apology to the entire Golden Boy community
