Torres vs Holt Rematch to be Televised Live on Special Edition of “ShoBox: The New Generation” Saturdayposted by Kathleen Holland on July 4, 2008, in EventsBy Kathleen Holland WBO Jr. Welterweight champion, Ricardo Torres will defend his title against no 1 contender, Kendall Holt in a much anticipated rematch Saturday on a special edition of “ShoBox: The New Generation”. The bout will come to us live from The Theatre of the Performing Arts at Planet Hollywood and will air on “Showtime” beginning at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast). In their first meeting on September 1, 2007, Torres (32-1, 28 KOs) was awarded an 11th round TKO over Holt (23-3, 12 KOs) who was ahead on two of the three judges scorecards when Torres executed a right that sent Holt to the canvas near his corner. Holt tried to get to his feet, but appeared to slip on wet canvas where fans had thrown beer cans, soda and water into the ring and even though Holt was on his feet, referee Genaro Rodriguez did not stop the fight to dry the ring, but halted the bout awarding the TKO victory to Torres in his hometown of Barranquilla, Colombia. Rodriguez did acknowledge after the fight that perhaps he should have called for the canvas to be dried, but at that point it was too late. Also on the televised portion of the card will be a ten round junior welterweight co-feature pitting undefeated Super Lightweight Lamont Peterson, (24-0, 11 KOs) against Rogelio Castaneda, Jr. (24-13-3, 8 KOs). Peterson last fought Antonio Mesquita in January of this year when he won a ten round decision. Castaneda is coming off an October, 2007 decision when he defeated Ubaldo Hernandez in a ten round rematch. “I’m really excited about this fight”, exclaimed Peterson, “I’m fighting in Vegas and it is my first time fighting in Vegas as a pro and I’m really looking forward to it because the crowd is usually really hamped up for the fight and I’m looking forward to a good time and I’m just really happy to be a part of it.” Peterson is looking for Castaneda to come out in an aggressive style, but is confident that he will prevail. He has put his all into training for this fight and is looking forward to keeping his undefeated record in tact. The card also features a super bantamweight women’s bout when undefeated Ann Julaton (4-0) will take on undefeated Johanna Mendez (3-0, 1 KO) in a scheduled six round bout. Julaton is trained by Freddie Roach and is coming off a victory that was just last Thursday. “We try to copy the same format as Manny Pacquiao.” Said Julaton. “We train six days a week. Monday, Wednesday and Friday he does a lot of leg work and calisthenics and Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday is when he does a lot of sparring and we try to keep up the same pace with that.” This event is promoted by Top Rank in association with Planet Hollywood and Showtime. Tickets are available at the Planet Hollywood Box Office and are reasonably priced starting at $50.00. Next article: PHOTO GALLERY - Holt vs. Torres Press Conference »
