Today I am pleased to inform you a majority of this week’s pillar to post will be regarding action in the ring, rather than me second guessing the wonderful world of boxing matchmaking for five paragraphs.

Anthony Bonsante prompted everyone watching Friday Night Fights to think Adonis Stevenson had killed him, I mean seriously killed him. Bonsante was floored by Stevenson within the first few moments of the fight, and apparently made it seem much more dramatic than it really was. Bonsante was laid out on the canvas, eyes shut, absolutely motionless with the exception of straightening out his leg, like people do before they die in movies. What made this turn of events even more bizarre was when Bonsante shot up at the 6 count only to find that the fight had been waived off while he was pretending to be dead, causing a heated debate between Bonsante and the referee. I’m pretty sure the knockout wasn’t even real, and Bonsate was planning on turning this fight into a Hollywood comeback of his own, just for fun, and no the fact that Bonsante is from my hometown has nothing to do with that assumption. That isn’t bias, it’s pure, hard-nosed journalism.
The biggest fight of the week came to an early halt on Saturday, as Joshua Clottey outpointed Zab Judah through nine rounds, after a cut over Judah’s left eye drew a stop to the action. Clottey escaped with a win in what has been tagged as a grudge match, not because these two fought before, but because Zab Judah claims him and clottey sparred a few years ago, and Clottey insists Judah is mistaking him for his brother, I kid you not, that my friends is bad blood. This really makes you wish for the good old days, when we had decent storylines to run with, like fighters who spit on their opponent’s wives, those guys were the real warriors.
Showtime actually gave us a nice little weekend of boxing, kicking off on Friday night with Ishe Smith outboxing Polish prospect Pawel Wolak. Smith put on a clinic of uppercuts for the game, but overmatched Wolak, easing to a ten round decision win. Is it just me or is Ishe Smith always getting either robbed or booed? He’s like boxing’s own road dog, never plays the part of “house” fighter, but keeps on trucking. With that being said bring on Margarito, Smith ko’s him… in Mexico. Again this is precise journalism, not bias, and no this assumption has nothing to do with the fact that Ishe is my friend on Facebook.

A night after Smith’s win, Vic Darchinyan knocked out Dimitri Kirilov for the IBF Super Flyweight title on Showtime. It’s hard to imagine a guy the size of a jockey being this hard core but Darchinyan is definitely one of the baddest dudes I have ever seen. Is it fair to say that if Pac-man is fighting Oscar, we can cross our fingers for a Darchinyan-Pavlik showdown? Wishful thinking? Maybe, but that never stopped me from writing to Bob Arum, expressing my interest in an Anne Wolfe-Mike Tyson match up

Alright, I know that last paragraph kind of contradicted my claim to staying off the matchmaking topic but we all have our dream fights. I’m signing off for now, so until next week God bless.
