Irish Middleweight Boxer, Andy Lee returned to the ring yesterday evening in his first fight of 2009 as the chief supporting bout to the Bernard Dunne V Richardo Cordoba, WBA Super -bantamweight world title clash at the O2 Arena, Dublin, Ireland promoted by Brian Peters Promotions. In front of a capacity crowd of 9,000 fans, the Limerick southpaw traded punches with former European title challenger Alexander Sipos from Germany. Sipos came to the venue with 19 wins on his record and a reputation as a tough, durable and seasoned fighter.

Lee got down to business from the first bell commanding the centre of the ring and working from behind the jab. Sipos plan was to rough the Irishman up using his strength and aggression, Lee countered by using his boxing skills to offset the German's onslaught. A clash of heads at the end of round one caused a cut to open in Lee's right eye.

A determined Sipos tried to draw Lee into a brawl as the second round opened, again Lee demonstrated his maturity and ring craft by countering with an effective jab and unleashing an effective straight left hand breaking through his opponent's defence. Sipos pressed forward and from a tight defence tried to cut the ring down.

With a few rounds under his belt, Lee began to find the measure of the experienced Sipos and began to dominate the fight. Sipos was relentless trying to bully his way into the inside, Lee was having none of it pushing his awkward opponent back with counters.

At the end of the seventh round, Lee caught Sipos with a powerful left hook sending him to the canvas as the bell rang to end the round. Lee showed he was the better fighter taking the last rounds comfortably to claim victory on points. Lee's record now moves to 17 W (13 KO) 1 L (1KO).

Andy Lee commented after the fight ' Alex Sipos was a very tough opponent and came to fight, I had to be careful not to leave myself open defensively. After my fight being cancelled in New York I was delighted to fight in Dublin and get the experience of a good developmental fight, these are the tests you have to pass along the way in your career.'
