Brazilian Jr. Middleweight contender Antonio Mesquita returns from a year and a half hiatus on Friday night when he takes on Mexico City's Victor Hugo Correa on the undercard of the Layla McCarter, Fujin Raika Lightweight Championship match at the South Point Hotel and Casino. Mesquita will not only be trying to work off some ring rust, he will be trying to shake off the effects of his only professional loss. We had a chance to speak to him at the press conference and get some thoughts on his return.

CM: You've been off for 18 months. Why so long?
AM: I had personal and managerial problems. Iam back with Luis Tapia now and we have plans for a world title fight hopefully three fights down the line.
CM: In your last fight you suffered the only loss of your career (against Lamont Peterson). Is there anything you can take from that fight that helps you become better?
AM: I learned that it is important to have the right people backing you. I also took that fight on two weeks notice and came down in weight more than I am used to. I respect Peterson, I think he'he's an outstanding boxer, but I think with the proper time and training I win that fight.
CM: Are you familiar at all with Correa?
AM: I know Said (El Harrak) stopped him in two rounds, but I don't want to take him lightly. I respect him as a fighter and as a Mexican fighter I know he's going to have a lot of heart. I am confident in my training. I am ready to go the distance if I have to but I'm expecting a knockout.
CM: Everyone knows you as a power puncher, but one of your most underrated qualities is your defense. Wanna elaborate on that?
AM: I always look to box. A knockout to me is consequential. I was fortunate enough to learn from guys like Julio Cesar Chavez. I sparred with guys like Jose Luis Castillo and Antonio Margarito when I trained in Tijuana. My attitude is boxing is a skill and I look to box, but if the opportunity for a knockout comes I do try to end the fight.
CM: Are you more comfortable at Welterweight or Super Welter?
AM: I have mostly fought at 147, but I think there's probably more opportunities at 154 and I feel stronger at 154 so that makes me more confident.
