Recently, a press release was issued in which Glen Johnson called out the likes of Roy Jones Jr., Bernard Hopkins, Chad Dawson and Clinton Woods. Johnson claimed to be feared and ducked by the division's best. In that piece, Johnson failed to mention one fighter, a boxer whose name he avoids repeating as if it invoked The Candyman: Shaun George. "Those guys are preocuppied," says George, 15-2 (7 KO), of Johnson's choice of opponents. "They're doing their own thing right now. It's clear they don't want to fight you. I'm willing and able. You're calling them out, well I'm calling you out. Let's make it happen. Stop ducking and dodging. You have a date coming up, I want in." "He knows fighting me is a mistake," continues George, who is promoted by Hall of Fame Promotions. "When it all comes down to it, he's fighting for the money. Why would you want to fight a guy like Roy Jones Jr, somebody you already knocked out? If I beat somebody, I'm never thinking twice about that guy. You think you're one of the best, you think you're the toughest, your presser says you're aging like fine wine, well then step up to the plate." Especially if he won 50 of those fights by knockouts. Quite an impressive streak that Rodolfo " Gato " Gonzalez started in 1959. Nevertheless there would be many turns ahead for Rodolfo on the road to stardom. Rodolfo Gonzalez was born in Guadalajara, Mexico in 1945. All 52 of his wins took place in Mexico against boxers with less then stellar records. Still he was learning his trade. Gonzalez made his U.S. debut in 1963 and suffered his first loss when he was stopped in the tenth round by Licho Guerrero at the famous Olympic Auditorium. Nevertheless it was a long road for Argentine defensive wizard Nicolino Locche. By the time he met Paul Fuji in Tokyo, Japan for the World Boxing Association Light Welterweight title, Locche had amassed over one hundred fights. He halted the pained and frustrated Fuji in the tenth round to capture the crown. From the begininng Locche fought almost all his battles in his native Argentina. His early career had its ups and downs but he won far more times then he lost or drew. In 1963 he burst on to the international scene with a decision win over former world lightweight champion Joe " Old Bones " Brown. In 1965 Nicolino met newly crowned lightweight titlist, the slick Ismael Laguna. The non title, overweight affair was judged a draw. Laguna then lost the title back to the great Carlos Ortiz and in 1966 Locche met Ortiz in a non title affair. Again the crafty Nicolino had to settle for a draw. Continue reading "NICOLINO " El Intocable " LOCCHE" » Esteban De Jesus - A Tragic Storyposted by Kathleen HollandStory by Jim Amato If ever a boxer was a victim of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, it was Puerto Rico's Esteban De Jesus. This former one time claimant of the W.B.C. lightweight title may have been the best Puerto Rican 135 pounder since Carlos Ortiz. Unfortunately he boxed during the era of possibly the greatest of all lightweights, Roberto Duran. This occurred on November 17, 1972 at Madison Square Garden. Esteban floored Duran in the first round and then boxed his way to a decision win in a non-title bout. Then he twice whipped the respected Ray Lampkin in bouts for the American Lightweight title thus establishing himself as the top contender. On his way to his first meeting with Duran, Esteban had lost just once and that was to W.B.A. featherweight champion Antonio Gomez in a non-title fight. He defeated Josque Marquez twice, Victor Ortiz, Lionel Hernandez, Percy Hayles, Angel Robinson, and Cleveland's Chuck Wilburn. After his victory over Duran, Estsban defeated the classy Johnny Gant and former junior welterweight titleholder, Alfonso Frazier. These victories finally set up a title shot against Duran. On March 16, 1974 in Panama City, Esteban again decked Duran in the first round. this time though Roberto was in much better condition and he gradually wore down his formidable foe stopping Esteban in round eleven. As much as I like Arturo I feel he has without a doubt reached the end of the line after being defeated by Alfonso Gomez. This was a fight that Arturo was not supposed to lose..Gatti could expect a tough fight but he was expected to go out a winner. To me Gomez is a naturally talented boxer with a great personality. He really won over the fans on the " Contender " show. Still I thought he had limitations and I really didn't think he could beat Arturo Gatti. Not even a fading version of Gatti. Whatever Gomez could do, Artuto could do better. Every match up, jab, hand speed , power, defense and ring generalship all favored Arturo. This is not a knock against Gomez who can be quite a clever boxer when he chooses to. Gomez also has some sting to his punches and is better defensively then he is given credit for. He just does not do these things as well as Arturo. Or so I thought. I also thought Gatti had the edge in heart because of his proven track record against world class opposition. Gomez though had shown great heart in his performances too. Continue reading "Goodbye to Gatti the Great . . . Again" » JERRY QUARRYposted by Kathleen HollandBy Jim Amato This article was written less than a year before Quarry passed away. Mike Tyson was the self proclaimed "Baddest Man On The Planet." Even after his decisive loss to Buster Douglas in 1990 and three year exile to prison many still believed him. His two subsequent losses to Evander Holyfield have now changed all that. It's too bad that Mike didn't box in the talent rich late 60's and early 70's. If Mike would have wanted to meet a real "Tough Guy," he could have looked up Jerry Quarry. Remember Jerry Quarry? He was a perennial mainstay in the heavyweight division throughout the 60's and 70's. The dominant "White Hope" of that era Jerry was always in the thick of the title picture and had a tremendous following. The fans either loved him or hated him. They could never seem to find a middle ground and either could the odds makers. Just when it seemed that Quarry had arrived at the crest of his skills, those skills would desert him. Untimely losses and remarkable come back wins were his claim to fame. What Jerry had is what the respected Evander Holyfield and many of today's other top heavyweight lack. That was charisma. Win or lose the fans always got their money's worth and the press produced reams of copy on Jerry's adventures in and out of the ring. Quarry entered the pro ranks with the reputation as a comer. An accomplished amateur, Jerry's progress up the fistic ladder was on its way. As Jerry began to establish his credentials he began to receive more and more interest. One of the interested parties was the none other than Rocky Marciano. The rumor was that the "The Rock" was willing to pay $100,000 for Jerry's contract. Big money in those days. Just as this rosy scenario was unfolding the fates sent Jerry an omen of things to come. There messenger, Eddie Machen. Eddie was a hardluck ex-contender on the way down the ladder. Pete Mead died on July 2nd. He was 83 years old. Mead began his 56 fight professional career in 1942. In 1946 he made his first of several appearances at New York's Madison Square Garden with a six round decision over Tommy Merrill. He stepped up his competition beating Vince LaSalva and Jerry Fiorello. Pete split two bouts with rugged Herbie Kronowitz and then defeated the pride of Niles, Ohio, Sonny Horne. Mead then scored a big victory over Fritzie Zivic. In 1947 Pete returned to the Garden and lost a verdict to the highly regarded Harold Green. In his next match Mead lost a return bout with Horne. Pete rebounded to defeat Horne in their rubber match. Next he scored a tenth round KO victory over Rueben Shank. Mead would then rack up eight more wins including split decisions over the great Cocoa Kid and Kronowitz. Pete would drop an eight rounder to Vinnie Rossano but he roared back to stop tough Joey DeJohn in five rounds. Ruiz Agrees to WBA Elimination fight against Chagaevposted by mightygloves.com on August 9, 2006LAS VEGAS (August 9, 2006) – Two-time world heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz (41-6-1, 28 KOs) has accepted the challenge offered by the World Boxing Association to fight No. 2 rated challenger Ruslan “White Tyson” Chagaev (21-0-1, 17 KOs) in an elimination bout to determine the organization’s official No. 1 heavyweight contender. The WBA notified No. 1 rated Ruiz and Chagaev of its Championship Committee’s decision for an elimination bout, based on rule 10.3, and urged promoters Don King (Ruiz) and Klaus Peter Kohl (Chagaev) to begin negotiations and make necessary arrangements to stage the 12-round elimination fight. The WBA gave each fighter until August 10 to determine if they are interested in participating in the elimination bout. Ruiz lost a controversial majority decision to WBA heavyweight champion Nicolay Valuev last December in Berlin. Valuev’s mandatory title defense is due by December 17. “Valuev has my belt,” Ruiz said. “If I can’t get him to fight me instead of (Monte) Barrett in October, I really don’t have a much of a choice, so we’ve informed the WBA of our willingness to fight Chagaev in the elimination fight. It’s obvious that Valuev doesn’t want to fight me. He knows that I really beat him in his backyard. The decision was so bad everybody in the entire Berlin stadium was booing.” Chagaev, a southpaw from Uzebekistan, now fights out of Germany. He is the reigning WBA Intercontinental heavyweight champion. Ruiz plans on returning to the gym this week in Las Vegas or Puerto Rico.
