Cotto destroys Gomez

Story by Mark DeSisto

In a complete mismatch at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic
City, New Jersey, WBA welterweight champion Miguel
Cotto pounded and toyed with “Contender” star Alphonso
Gomez for 5 rounds before Gomez’s corner called a halt
to the bout on the advice of the ringside physician.
Cotto’s dominance was evident from the opening bell,
showing off his still underrated boxing skills as he
couldn’t miss with the jab, moved out of the way of
anything Gomez threw, and timing effective power
punches. A jab at the end of round 1 seemed to have
Gomez stumbling a bit and Gomez’s face was already
quite red and marked up.

Zuniga upsets Oganov; Kirkland stops Said

posted by mightygloves.com on September 4, 2007

zunigaoganovfi3.jpgTACOMA, Wash. (Sept. 1, 2007) – In exactly the type of well-matched, hotly contested fight that exemplifies what “ShoBox: The New Generation” is all about, Fulgencio Zuniga (20-2-1, 17 KOs) registered a convincing ninth-round TKO over previously undefeated World Boxing Organization (WBO) No. 8 contender Victor Oganov (26-1, 26 KOs) in a one-sided war for the vacant International Boxing Organization (IBO) super middleweight championship Saturday on SHOWTIME.

kirklandsaidft2.jpg

In the co-feature of a tremendous “ShoBox” fight card, highly regarded unbeaten WBO No. 10-ranked 154-pound contender James Kirkland (20-0, 17 KOs) demolished Mohammad Said (22-6-1, 14 KOs), dropping him three times en route to a scintillating second-round knockout.

Gary Shaw Productions, LLC, in association with Brian Halquist Productions, co-promoted the terrific doubleheader from Emerald Queen Casino. It aired on SHOWTIME at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).

The battle-tested Zuniga, of Padilla, Columbia, overcame a disputed first-round knockdown to out-work, out-hustle, out-punch, out-fight and, ultimately, outclass Oganov, who entered the ring having won all 26 of his fights inside the distance.

“The World Awaits” – De La Hoya vs Mayweather

posted by Kathleen Holland on April 26, 2007

With the Mega Fight only a few days away, it seems the attention has switched from boxing to the financial success of the promotion. During this week’s telephone conference call, it seemed that most of the questions asked by the media pertained to the tremendous success of the marketing campaign and the substantial amount of money generated by the fight.

This certainly appears to be the biggest revenue producing promotion in the history of boxing, but to boxing fans, that is not what this is all about. The true test of how big of a success this event will be depends on what the boxers bring to the ring and whether or not they will live up to the fans very high expectations. We have seen both of these fighters run, even though it is not typical for Oscar, but we have never seen Oscar meet the likes of Floyd Mayweather, Jr. Floyd, who is very quick is probably the best pound for pound in the world, and if he uses the same game plan as in his last fight, quick punches and run, then it will be up to Oscar to keep the fight exciting by cutting Floyd off. On the other hand, if Oscar can’t handle Floyd, we may see him decide to run. Be that as it may, it will be interesting to see how the fight actually plays out, whether or not the spectators, either watching it in person or on TV, actually get their money’s worth.

SAN ANTONIO, TX – Manny Pacquaio (44-3-2, 33 KOs) scored an 8th round KO over Jorge Solis ( 33-1-2, 23 KOs) and retained his WBC International Super Featherweight title at the Alamodome before an excited crowd of 14,793, the second largest attendance in boxing history in San Antonio right behind the Chavez-Whitaker fight.

Pacquaio suffered a cut over his left eye due to an accidental head butt in the fifth round, but that didn’t seem to affect him much, as he closed the round out with a barrage of combinations. The sixth round was ferocious with both fighters giving it there all, but the end came at 1:16 seconds of the 8th round when referee Vic Drakulich reached the count of ten after Solis second knockdown in the round. Pacquaio had won every round but two on each of the judges score cards.

CES releases world champion Missy Fiorentino

posted by mightygloves.com on February 14, 2007

PROVIDENCE (February 13, 2007) - Classic Entertainment & Sports, Inc. (CES) has released IWBF featherweight champion Missy "The Fury" Fiorentino from her promotional contract, effective immediately, due to detrimental behavior at last Friday night's "Hearts Of Fire" show in Providence, CES president Jimmy Burchfield announced today.

Fiorentino (15-1, 6 KOs) walked Mia St. John to the ring and stood in her corner before and after the St. John's title fight against Missy's CES stablemate Jaime Clampitt, who won a 10-round unanimous decision (100-90, 100-90, 99-91) for the vacant IWBF lightweight championship, which Fiorentino had relinquished.

"CES stands for teamwork, family and togetherness," Burchfield explained his decision to release Fiorentino. "That's what we are all about and anyone who isn't cannot be with us, regardless of the fighter's record and accomplishments. We acknowledged all of our fighters (in the audience) by introducing them in the ring, in between fights, as a sign of respect. Nobody could find Missy because she was in Mia's dressing room, which was the last place anybody from CES would have thought to look. I couldn't believe she was in the corner of her CES teammate's opponent. It was a bush league move that I will not tolerate by her or anybody else on Team CES."

According to Nevada State Athletic Commission rules, a fighter who does not make weight is given two hours to take off up to two pounds. Corrales lost ½ pound in that time period making his official weight for tonight’s bout 139 lbs.

Boxing as Boxing Should Be

posted by Kathleen Holland on August 1, 2006

The thought of a boxing tournament which highlights great boxing talent from around the globe, giving young promising athletes a chance to showcase their skills in front of a national audience and giving boxing fans an awesome display of highly competitive “Mighty”combat, is a concept that was masterminded by Chris Middendorf, matchmaker for Gary Shaw Productions, LLC and an idea that he was determined to make a reality. “I spent a lot of time studying everybody at 168, and I kept coming back to the fact that there were so many undefeated fighters, many of whom, from around the world, that we hadn’t even heard of in this country, and so I had been thinking about the idea of doing a tournament” Middendorf said, “well here, I have pinpointed seventeen undefeated super middleweights from around the world and we ended up getting five of them, one of them we can’t get into the country, but we will bring him back another time. I went and pitched it to Gary and he liked the idea and then I went to Showtime, and they loved it, and we were able to put together a couple of dates, two consecutive Fridays for the first round, and we marched on from there.”
