Note: After watching the fight again on HBO, I have come to the conclusion that Kelly Pavlik beat Jermain Taylor down in the seventh round to the point where Taylor was out and unable to continue. The position from which I watched the fight live had Taylor’s back to me and it was impossible to see his face from that angle. His face told the story and the call was a correct one, Taylor was not responding with connecting punches, just wild flailing shots that were in no way a threat. .

ATLANTIC CITY – Kelly Pavlik (32-0, 29 KOs) became the new WBC and WBO middleweight champion of the world Saturday night in Atlantic City by 7th round TKO when he attacked Jermain Taylor (27-1-1, 17 KOs) with a barrage of punches that had Taylor on the ropes and in trouble.

First Kronk Champion, James Steward, Dies at 53

James Edward Steward, Sr., 53, brother of Hall of Fame Trainer, Emanuel Steward and first champion of the famous Kronk Gym lost his final match to cancer on Saturday, March 24.

When James was 15, he left his home in West Virginia for Detroit to live with his older brother, Emanuel. It wasn’t long after James arrived in Detroit that he asked Emanuel to teach him to box. Even though Emanuel wasn’t too keen on the idea of his younger brother boxing and since he had been out of boxing for some time, he reluctantly agreed to teach James some basics. They went to the Kronk Recreation Center on Detroit’s south-west side, where the two began to train. After about five months, under Emanuel’s tutelage, James had secured a place in the Detroit Golden Gloves and won the 1970 Detroit Golden Gloves Championship. James Steward, who earned the nickname “Baby Ali” was one of Detroit’s hottest prospects and repeated as Golden Gloves champion in 1971 and 1972.

James left Detroit in 1972 and returned to West Virginia where he worked as a coal miner.

Andy Lee To Face Brazilian KO Artist

posted by mightygloves.com on February 27, 2007

andyleeint_lg.jpg(NEW YORK) Feb 27, 2007 - In a battle of former Olympians, Irish middleweight sensation Andy Lee (7-0 with 4 KOs) will fight Brazilian knockout puncher Cleiton “Soul Man” Conceicao (10-2 with 8 KO’s) at Madison Square Garden on March 16th as part of the “Erin Go Brawl” PPV event where John Duddy vs Anthony Bonsante face each other in the ‘St Patricks Eve’ main event.
Conceicao, 27, represented Brazil in the 2000 Olympics, eventually losing a decision to American Jeff Lacy. Lee, 22, represented Ireland in the 2004 Olympics before signing a management agreement with Emanuel Steward.

Conceicao has dynamite in each fist, knocking out 80% of his victims. In his last fight, in August 2006, Conceicao battled to draw with American prospect Dante Craig, even knocking Craig down in the tenth with a crushing right hook. If not for a low blow point deduction Conceicao would have won a decision and the NBA Intercontinental Middleweight Title.

“This is a true battle of prospects” said Emanuel Steward “both have represented their countries in Olympics and I expect both to have large followings in New York, Conceicao is Andy’s toughest test yet”. Steward is confident Andy will pass the test, the two have been training in Mallorca, Spain alongside world heavyweight king Wladimir Klitschko.

Mightygloves.com mourns the loss of a fine man and proud Irishman, John O’Donoghue. We had the honor and pleasure of meeting John a few months ago when we were covering his nephew, future champion Andy Lee, and immediately felt as if he had always been a part of our boxing family. We always looked forward to seeing John at Andy’s fights, and he was always there. His support for Andy’s boxing career was a core part of John’s life and the enormous pride for his nephew was obvious each time we spoke. John was a pleasure to know, and he will be profoundly missed.

NEW YORK – Undefeated Middleweight, Andy Lee (6-0, 3 KOs) defeated Dennis Sharpe (17-3-3, 4 KOs) by unanimous decision in a six round battle at Madison Square Garden Saturday night.

Using his aggressive offensive skills and his keen defense Lee methodically won every round over his opponent, Sharpe, who has had over three times as many fights as Lee, but clearly lacked the skills necessary to win the fight, even though he was able to get in a few good punches, especially in the final round when Lee’s vision was impaired due to blood from a cut over his right eye that was caused by an accidental head-butt in the 5th..
